Sustainability

Our vision is to provide long term sustainability throughout the produce supply chain. The goal is to strive for continual improvement, looking for opportunities that lessen our impact on the environment, make Royal a great place to work, and contribute to the betterment of our community. 

Royal has a full single-stream recycling program in place recycling all office paper, plastics, glass, and other recyclable materials. Recycling containers are located in each office and throughout the facility to encourage participation in reducing the amount of waste sent to the landfill. All cardboard is baled and sent to a recycling facility. Royal recycles all of its cardboard packaging, diverting 90 tons of cardboard form the landfill each year.

Royal installed LED lighting in 62,000 square feet of its coolers and dock areas. Each light is on a motion sensor and the lights turn off after no activity in 20 minutes. In the first year, Royal reduced electricity use by 10%.

Royal's entire fleet of trucks is less than 6 years old ensuring compliance with the latest fuel efficiency standards and technologies.  Royal employs tools through its fleet monitoring software to monitor fuel consumption and efficiency. These include tools that monitor how long trucks are left idling during delivery and operators who operate their trucks in a manner that reduces fuel efficiency. All cargo doors are fitted with sensors that shut off refrigeration units when the cargo doors opens for delivery, reducing the amount of fuel the refrigeration units consume.

Royal purchases renewable energy credits through Georgia Power to offset our carbon emissions.

Our Green Business Certification, obtained in 2015, attests to our commitment to operating our business in ways that are sustainable. This logo indicates that we:

• Are recognized by Green Business Bureau as having demonstrated commitment to promoting and implementing business practices that are environmentally responsible, and
• Have met the standards set forth by the Green Business Bureau.

 

 

 

 

Georgia Grown and Georgia Organics

Royal Food Service supports Georgia Grown and Georgia Organics and helps small local farms with sustainability and food safety standards.

 

Georgia Grown

In 2012, Royal Food Service joined Georgia Grown, a program designed by the Georgia Dept. of Agriculture to help the agricultural economies by joining with producers, processors, suppliers, distributors, retailers, agritourism and consumers to help them grow.

Georgia Organics

Royal Food Service is also a member of Georgia Organics. Georgia Organics is recognized state-wide and abroad as experts in local, sustainable organic agriculture. This affiliation helps us to support local organic farming, our customers in healthcare whose patients depend on certified organic produce for treatment, and increases visibility to our expanding line of organic fruits and vegetables. Royal Leads the Local Produce Movement

Low-Power LED Lighting

• Reduced electrical power consumption by replacing former CFL-type lighting with more highly-efficient LED lighting.
•  Lighting system is motion controlled to save energy when lights are not in use.

 

 

 

Blue Tree Systems

• Allows us to ensure greater product life by monitoring driver idle time, reducing carbon, engine performance
• Monitors fuel consumption, driving style, reefer unit cooler temperatures, and more
• Helps to minimize our carbon footprint by deceasing fuel consumption by 600 gallons per week
• Increases overall delivery efficiencies by 8%
• Greatly improves customer satisfaction by providing pertinent information to help us manage the delivery process in real time

 

Integrating Local Produce Where Possible

• Royal sells products from more than 85 local farms mainly in Georgia and surrounding states
• Approximately 20 local farms are certified by Greener Fields Together as complying with higher sustainable agriculture standards

 

 

Cardboard Recycling

• All cardboard is baled and sent to a recycling facility. 
• Approximately 90 tons of recyclables are diverted from the landfill each year.

Online Order System

Our online order system reduces paper waste and saves customers time while offering order convenience.

 

Paper Reduction

• Use laser printers for invoices reducing the number of copies printed to paper
• Archival of all invoices to electronic storage
• Work with our customers on paper reduction initiatives

 

Trash Recycling

Royal Food Service is committed to doing its part to be environmentally responsible. In addition to cardboard recycling, in offices, break rooms, and other areas throughout our facilities you will find recycling bins and other containers for recyclable materials.
